DUBAI, Aug 7: Dubai authorities have introduced a pilot initiative to reduce working hours for
certain government entities during the summer. This initiative, named “Our Flexible Summer,”
will also suspend work on Fridays, as announced by the Dubai Government Human Resources
Department (DGHR).
From August 12 to September 30, employees at 15 government entities will have their work
hours reduced to seven per day. This change will extend their weekends to two and a half days
(Friday half-day, Saturday, and Sunday) for seven weeks.
While the DGHR did not disclose which entities are participating, the initiative is designed to
enhance workplace flexibility, safety during the summer, and overall work-life balance. A survey
conducted by the department showed strong support for the initiative, highlighting the
willingness of government agencies to embrace changes that improve employee well-being.
In addition to benefiting employees, the initiative aims to reduce energy consumption in
government departments. The DGHR will assess the initiative’s impact on productivity and
employee satisfaction, drawing on similar successful implementations in other regions. For
instance, Sharjah’s three-day weekend led to an 88% increase in productivity, a 90% rise in job
satisfaction, and a 94% customer service satisfaction rate.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, director-general of the DGHR, emphasized that the initiative
aligns with Dubai’s vision to develop innovative policies that enhance the quality of life for its
employees and promote sustainable use of resources. This effort is part of Dubai’s broader
strategy to become a leading global city for superior lifestyle and work conditions.
