Breakout Rooms
Breakout Rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting into small groups. Breakout rooms are great for
group work and small group discussions. Participants have full audio, video and screen share abilities. If chat
is enabled in your profile settings, participants can use this as well. Participants can also request remote
control access within their breakout group. This allows them to work on one document. Although using
Collaborations in Canvas is much more funtional.
The meeting host can choose to split the participants of the meeting into these separate sessions
automatically or manually, and can switch between sessions at any time. The host can only be in one group
at a time, so it is useful to be connected to the Zoom session by the VC unit as well. This enables the teacher
to see the whole class while they are working in their breakout rooms, as long as all students are in the
same physical room with a room unit. Be aware that when the host moves into a breakout room, Zoom
automatically assigns a new host from any of the participants left in the main session. 27
Check that Breakout Rooms are activated in your meeting settings.
To start Breakout Rooms, select Breakout Rooms from the menu.
Assigning students manually
Select the number of rooms you would like to create, and click Manually.
Click Create Rooms.
You rooms will be created, but will not start automatically. Once the rooms are created, you can manage the
rooms prior to starting them.
To assign participants to your Breakout Rooms, select Assign next to the room you wish to assign
participants to and select the checkbox next to each participant you wish to assign to that room. Repeat this
for each room.
Once a participant has been assigned (manually or automatically), the number of participants will show in
place of the Assign button.
