       Men With Fins

Let’s hear it for the boys!

All my masculine presenting souls out there, this one is for you!

Finding your place in this feminine dominant world can be difficult. There can be fear
of ridicule, difficulty finding accessories and costumes right for you, and tough to find
like-minded mers of the same gender identity. Have no fear! Men have been strong
figures in water-based lore and activities for centuries, Hello Poseidon! If you’re having
trouble finding inspiration here are a few of my favorite Mer-dudes.

        KING TRITON
The Little Mermaid’s father, King Triton, is tough and buff. Though a bit over protective,
he comes around in the end. You can tell he acts from love for his family and Kingdom.
Raising seven daughters as a single dad AND ruling a kingdom can’t be easy! This Mer-
man is legendary from his big heart to his epic beard to his iconic triton.

        MERMAID MAN AND BARNACLE BOY
Morgana Alba of Circus Siren described it to me best, the term mermaid refers to the
species. Being described as such shouldn’t raise offense. Take it from Mermaid Man
himself! Sort of like, mankind, its a work digestible for the humans. The dynamic duo
of grumpy elderly superheroes has a special place in my heart. They appeared on the
cartoon SpongeBob Squarepants, creating humor and chaos in Bikini Bottom as they
drove around in their invisibility boat-mobile. Though they are past their prime, Mermaid
Man and Barnacle Boy give me hope that aquatic powers and protecting the ocean from
        “Eeevil!” will never fade.

        AQUAMAN
No tail? No problem. Aquaman is super mascline and human presenting but harnesses
all the power of the mighty ocean. If you don’t yet have your own set of fins, no worries,
pop on the DC movie starring Jason Momoa or flip through the many comics featuring
this aquatic superstar. Did you know Jason Momoa started his own water company to
combat plastic waste? How’s that for saving the world?

CODY GRIFFIN - THE THIRTEENTH YEAR
This Disney Channel Original broke the mold for mermaids in media, when Cody Griffin
started developing strange supernatural symptoms on his 13th birthday. His adopted BRANDON YATES
                                                                                                                                       @brandonyatesofficial
parents, best friend, and new girlfriend didn’t know what to think at first, but quickly fell
into supporting his new form - merman!

This movie also showcased the impressive athletic ability merpeople possess. Cody is an
accomplished swimmer! Maybe Michael Phelps is hiding some scales too?
