Guildhall School’s principal, Lynne Williams, received the Freedom of the City of London at a ceremony at Guildhall on
Wednesday 25 September.
The award, given to celebrate important achievements or contributions to London life, has recently been made to more than 100
women in commemoration of the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, which gave women the right to vote,
including Guildhall alumna Jodie Whittaker (Acting 2005) and Kate Royal (Opera 2003).
Believed to have begun in 1237, previous recipients of the Freedom of the City of London have included Winston Churchill, Joan
Collins and Princess Diana, but the award also recognises wider society. People can either be nominated or apply. The 100+ recent
recipients include women involved in areas as diverse as law, accountancy, teaching, property, social work, government and
medicine.
