In echoes of real life, the central plot of I May Destroy You focuses on Arabella being sexually assaulted while
taking a break from writing a draft of her book due the following day.
THE SMASH HIT OF THE SUMMER
I May Destroy You premiered on both sides of the Atlantic in June and has quickly become this summer's
must-watch series, with some comparing it to the 'next Normal People or Fleabag'.
However for many, I May Destroy You has done far more than either of its BBC predecessors.
The Daily Telegraph declared it the 'most revolutionary TV drama in years' while New York Magazine said it
was the 'most sublimely unsettling show of the year'.
Reflecting on the hype in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coel admitted it was strange because
lockdown has meant her life remains essentially 'normal'.
She said: 'You know what, it's something that is strange to me. I think because of the lockdown. Everything
feels very normal in my life. Also, I'm not really on Instagram and Twitter at all. So where do you feel the
warmth from having been the hottest thing on anything? Where is it? I'm watering a plant that I've bought. I'm
starting on a new puzzle.
She continued: 'I've actually cried [in interviews], because it's quite overwhelming, especially when you're
working so hard that you don't often reflect and process. We finished postproduction only really two weeks
ago, so I've just finished working, so I haven't really yet had time to really process anything.'
