Winners have been announced for the Association of Lighting Designers’ 2019 Awards for Excellence,
which celebrate the achievements of students and recent graduates.
Formerly called the Michael Northen Awards, the winners were celebrated at a lunch event held at
London’s Victoria Park Plaza in December.
The award for lighting design was this year presented to two winners; Lucía Sánchez Roldán from the
RADA and Rose Bruford’s Ryan Joseph Stafford.
As well as being awarded £500 each, the prize this year includes a six-month mentoring scheme with
industry professionals.
The award for video design, which includes £500 in cash, six months of mentoring and a £1,250 hire
credit from sponsors towards a commercial venture, went to Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts’
Tracy Gibbs.
A new award for production electronics, which includes six months mentoring and a £500 cash prize,
was won by Rohan McDermott of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Steve Huttly, ALD awards committee member and head of the judging panel, said: “Judged by a panel
of eight leading practitioners, it was really hard to pick just one winner in the awards because the
quality of the entries was so high.
“In the end, the panel believed the only fair outcome was to award a joint first prize for the Michael
Northen award for lighting design.”
