Curlew River review — Ian Bostridge

        is astonishing in Britten’s parable

Our critic emerged into the twilight feeling at once shocked, purged and uplifted by
the tenor’s stunning performance at Blythburgh Church in Suffolk

Ian Bostridge, remarkable as the Madwoman in Curlew River, part of this year’s Aldeburgh Festival

Sixty years after its premiere, also at the Aldeburgh Festival, Britten’s church parable Curlew

River has had a production of such blazing intensity that I emerged into the midsummer twilight

feeling shocked, purged and uplifted all at once. And if Ian Bostridge has given a better stage
performance than this, as the distraught Madwoman searching for her abducted son, I haven’t

        seen it.
