Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst, daughter of composer Gustav and eminent
musician in her own right, are the intriguing subjects of this new work from Mark
Ravenhill. Britten has nine months to write the opera Gloriana for the 1953 Coronation
of Queen Elizabeth II and he, disheartened and capricious, is struggling. Thus a
tumultuous working relationship begins to blossom. Erica Whyman, the RSC’s recently
departed leader, returns to direct. FM
