One triumph has led to another. When Alim Beisembayev headed home with a clutch of awards
from the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2021, he was given the chance to
commission a piece to be played with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He picked
Eleanor Alberga for the job, and she was happy to oblige. Now 74, she has never quite found
widespread recognition, despite her work for the Last Night of the Proms in 2015, but has been
quietly, passionately forging her own path. As this scintillating premiere of her new piano
concerto proved, Beisembayev made a shrewd choice.
