Saëns from Les Siècles & François-Xavier Roth on Harmonia Mundi, a classy
Christmas album with a Norwegian accent from Lise Davidsen on Decca, and a
starry Donna del lago from the Rossini Festival in Pesaro (with Juan Diego Flórez and
Michael Spyres trading top Cs aplenty as the rivals for the eponymous heroine's hand).

Saint-Saëns: Symphonic Poems
Les Siècles, François-Xavier Roth
The first disc of this 2-CD set features the four Liszt-inspired symphonic poems which Saint-
Saëns composed in the 1870s (Phaéton, La Jeunesse d’Hercule, Le Rouet
d’Omphale and Danse macabre), plus the Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila. The second
opens with Le carnaval des animaux, which is followed by the score for the 1908 historical
film L’Assassinat du duc de Guise.
