        Funding the arts

Sir, Richard Morrison highlights important challenges for opera and classical music (Times2,

Mar 28 & Apr 4) but he is wrong to imagine an “anti-elitist” conspiracy within the Arts

Council contributing to these challenges. We are proud of all the organisations we fund under

our Let’s Create strategy; they represent a good balance, honouring the many glories of our past,
while looking to the future. There are established companies such as the Royal Opera House,

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Shakespeare Company. There are newer

ones such as the Paraorchestra in Bristol, the Aurora Orchestra in London or Grimm & Co in

Rotherham. They are as varied and vibrant as the communities they serve. What they all have in

common is a commitment to reach the broadest possible audience, and give them an excellent
        time.
