One of my favourite walks in Britain – maybe the world – is along the waterfront at Liverpool.
It’s not just the Three Graces, the views of the Wirral, the mighty Mersey. It’s the magical cultural
history tour it affords: Billy Fury; the Beatles; John Hulley, founder of the UK’s Olympic
Association; naval memorials; docks redeveloped, docks that are now just names; a monument to
the Mimosa that took Welsh migrants to Patagonia. It all makes the imagination sail off through
time and to far-off lands.
