        The surprising renaissance of Liverpool

As the Eurovision Song Contest kicks off, the host city is taking it in its stride – it’s nothing new for
a city with such a colourful past

One of my favourite walks in Britain – maybe the world – is along the waterfront at Liverpool.

It’s not just the Three Graces, the views of the Wirral, the mighty Mersey. It’s the magical cultural
history tour it affords: Billy Fury; the Beatles; John Hulley, founder of the UK’s Olympic
Association; naval memorials; docks redeveloped, docks that are now just names; a monument to
the Mimosa that took Welsh migrants to Patagonia. It all makes the imagination sail off through
        time and to far-off lands.
