The idea of deciding our cultural tastes by committee is so often a recipe for disaster. Collaboration
is always needed, but not right at the top. What events such as these need is a single visionary who
can curate the best pop acts (both British and international), and the best from Britain’s arts
organisations, such as the National Theatre, ENO and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Before you say this sounds autocratic, may I remind you of the Opening Ceremony at London
2012, which, while a beast of many moving parts, was also powered by the specific artistic
brilliance of Danny Boyle. And that a single person curated the music for the King’s Coronation,
who just happened to be the King. I strongly believe this was why the music for the Coronation
service was a triumph, and the Coronation concert was not.
