BRITTEN SINFONIA AND THE SIXTEEN at Alice Tully Hall (Nov. 7, 7:30
p.m.). James MacMillan’s works are not often spotlighted in New York,
but the Scottish composer has been a key figure in British music for
some time. Here Harry Christophers leads an excellent chamber
orchestra and his own chorus in the United States premieres of
MacMillan’s “Miserere” and “Stabat Mater.” Other British music at Alice
Tully Hall includes an extraordinarily rare performance of Harrison
Birtwistle’s “Silbury Air” with Jeffrey Milarsky on the podium for a free
AXIOM concert on Friday.
