The Sixteen return to Carlisle Cathedral

               The Sixteen

The world-renowned choir, The Sixteen, make a welcome return to Carlisle in
their 40th anniversary year, as part of the 2019 Choral Pilgrimage.

Returning to Carlisle Cathedral after sell-out tours over the past few years,
The Sixteen will be bringing their 40th anniversary Choral Pilgrimage concert
to the city on Thursday 11 July. Founded by Harry Christophers in 1979, and
still led by him today, The Sixteen’s choir and period-instrument orchestra
stand today among the world’s greatest ensembles, peerless interpreters of
Renaissance, Baroque and modern choral music, acclaimed worldwide for
performances delivered with precision, power and passion. Regarded by
some as ‘the greatest choir in the world’, their celebrity fans include Joanna
Lumley, Alexander Armstrong and Nico Muhly.

This very special concert will feature music to uplift the spirit, stir the soul and
move the heart, bringing music written for Cathedrals back to where it
belongs. Featuring tracks from their latest album, An Enduring Voice, the
programme highlights include John Tavener’s Hymn to the Mother of God and
Gabriel Jackson’s Ave Maria, as well as a brand new piece written especially
by Sir James Macmillan: O virgo prudentissima.

Carlisle Cathedral is one of the smallest in the land, and as such tickets are
limited for this one-off performance. The starlight ceiling of the Cathedral’s
interior will be shining down on those lucky enough to be in attendance for this
once-in-a-lifetime concert. Tickets are available now from The Sixteen’s
website priced from £15.00 to £25.00.
