Rejoice! Carols from King’s will
broadcast despite pandemic
The annual tradition will go ahead this Christmas, albeit in a revised
format

A wet, grey Saturday afternoon in Cambridge. On King’s Parade a masked, middle-aged female
shopper draws her male companion’s attention to two BBC trucks parked outside King’s.
“Look, they must be filming the Christmas carols,” she exclaims. “Well, at least something is
happening as it should,” is his testy reply.
Inside King’s College Chapel the BBC is indeed prepping to film Carols from King’s, to go out
on BBC Two on Christmas Eve. Like the world-famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols,
broadcast live, also on Christmas Eve, this is an annual tradition — first shown in 1954. Many
of today’s crew are old hands, but this year’s event has presented unprecedented challenges:
