Woven elements
Woven is a broad term, yes, but that’s what makes it so easy to
hop on this trend! Whether you go for macrame wall art or plant
hangers (often found in Bohemian design), natural fibre rugs,
or rattan furniture, adding in woven pieces to your fall décor is
a surefire way to stay on trend. You may even have some of this
on hand already! Lots of outdoor patio furniture today is made
out of wicker or rattan, so instead of leaving it outside over the
winter or putting it in storage, why not bring it indoors and use
it through the colder months? Just make sure you’ve shaken
out the cushions so you’re not bringing in any bugs.
If the outdoor furniture won’t work with your space, look for small end tables or footstools, even baskets to hold your
blankets—it’s about to get chilly, after all.
Sustainable décor
The beginning of harvest season is a great time to decorate your home with natural and sustainable elements. As
more people are shopping sustainably, that includes repurposing old furniture, or using recycled materials. Finding
items at thrift shops to match your style, or ones that will with a little bit of restoration, is a great way to pick up a
one-of-a-kind piece that still keeps you on trend.
There are also many natural resources on our doorsteps—or at least nearby. Branches, leaves, greenery, twigs, and
other foliage are readily available when you step outside. Not only is it a fun and easy task to gather these items, it’s a
budget-friendly, family friendly activity you and the kids can enjoy together! Log rounds and stumps—once properly
treated and ready to be brought indoors—are also popular décor pieces, making for great side tables or table décor,
but they might be harder to come by. Press flowers into a photo frame and hang it on your wall, fill a glass bowl with
pine cones, or find taller plants that can be put into a vase and used as a piece of corner décor.
From dried flower wreaths, garlands, and assorted floral arrangements, to apple candle holders and fall fruit
centrepieces in mason jars, you can feel good about the zero-waste DIY approach to decorating your home.
Pumpkins are a staple when we think about fall accessories and décor, and they’re here to stay—but with a twist! With
the trend towards more vibrant colours, there are several ways to decorate and display them in, around and outside
of your home—you just need to use a bit of imagination and paint!
Plaid and checkered patterns
Most people opt for plaid and checkered patterns
every fall, regardless of whether they’re in style or
not, but this year they’re on trend, according to
Good Housekeeping. Just be sure to stay in those
neutral tones. You can add buffalo checkered pillows
to your couch, or toss a few throw blankets on the
bed for a functional and cozy on-trend look.
If you’re feeling a bit intimidated by checkered
patterns and are worried they’ll take over the room,
opt for smaller accessories (coasters, anyone?) or
add a large rug underneath a smaller, neutral rug so
the checkers are just a border.
