What to know about Victoria, British Columbia
With a population of about 408,000, Victoria has all the perks of city life but with a small town feel. It’s the largest city
on Vancouver Island and is known internationally as the City of Gardens thanks to its ideal growing climate. Here are
some other facts about Victoria:
• With the province’s parliament buildings based in Victoria, the region is a hub for careers in public service.
• Victoria might be Canada’s most friendly and romantic city. It has been named one of the top 15 friendliest cities
in the world and the most romantic city in Canada several times.
• Victoria has been named the best biking city in Canada and is continuing to improve its cycling routes to better
connect the growing city.
While Victoria is a coastal city on the Pacific Ocean, those who prefer less salty water will find many freshwater lakes
in the region or just outside Victoria.
What to do year-round in Victoria
While Canada’s west coast is known for rainy days, Victorians rarely need to pull out an umbrella during the summer
months. Victoria has Canada’s mildest climate (an average of 319 days are above zero degrees) and driest summers.
With temperate weather and a west coast passion for adventure, you won’t be lacking in things to do on the island. A
few of the top local experiences include:
Willows Beach — This family friendly beach is ideal for beachcombing, swimming, skimboarding, leisurely picnics
on the water with a view of Mount Baker.
Goldstream Provincial Park — Stand in awe of roaring waterfalls and massive trees more than 600 years old just
20 minutes from Victoria at this provincial park where you can camp, hike and view wildlife year round.
Royal BC Museum — Founded in 1886, this museum documents British Columbia’s natural and human history
with programming for adults, families and kids of all ages.
The Butchart Gardens — Marvel at 55 acres of perfectly manicured gardens with 900 plant varieties maintained
year-round by 50 full-time gardeners at the famous Butchart Gardens.
Hatley Castle — This awesome estate welcomes visitors to tour it’s gardens for free and learn more about the
mystery and history of this Edwardian castle built in 1908 (today it’s used for local university staff).
