                Facts about Whistler, British Columbia

                Long before European settlers
                arrived and Whistler became the
resort wonderland it is today, the
region was inhabited by the Coast
Salish First Nations people and Image via Ruth Hartnup on Flickr
                considered a waypoint for trading
                routes between the Squamish and
                Lil’wat Nations. Today, Whistler
pays tribute to its First Nations’
heritage with a variety of museums
                and cultural centres, including the
                award-winning Squamish Lil’wat
                Cultural Centre.
                Having learned about Whistler’s
beauty, Alex and Myrtle Philip, a
young couple with an entrepreneurial spirit, travelled to the area in 1911 and purchased ten-acres of land including
three or four small cabins. In 1915, the Philips opened Rainbow Lodge, and with the Pacific Great Eastern Railway
(now known as B.C. Rail) having been completed a year prior, change quickly steamed through the area.

Here are a few more interesting facts about Whistler:
                  • Originally labelled Alta Lake, the municipality’s current name came from an unlikely source—the hoary marmot,
AKA the ‘whistle pig’. The animal’s distinct, shrill warning call inspired early prospectors to rename the area to
                    Whistler.
                  • After its third bid, Whistler hosted the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2010—it lost out on the bid in
1968 and later turned down the opportunity in 1978.
                  • As an award-winning destination with multiple accolades, Whistler is no stranger to the podium—recent praise
includes Best Ski Resort in the World, Best Family Ski Resort in Canada, and multiple placements in the Top Ten
                    Resorts in Canada.
                  • Whistler Blackcomb is North America’s largest ski resort—Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are side by side,
offering more than 200 marked runs, 8,171 acres of terrain, 16 alpine bowls, and three glaciers.
                  • The region’s famous alpine terrain has been featured on the big screen—the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part
One and Two, The Crew with Liam Neeson, and the X-Files: I Want to Believe all include scenes filmed in Whistler.
