                 Thursday 8:30 - 9:30 Session S8 6th - 12th Level Congaree A Room
Fight Like a Girl: Addressing Disparities in Mathematics for Girls
From the twentieth century perspective, to be told you “fight like a girl” was an ultimate insult. Although
this phrase was commonly assigned to physical prowess, it inevitably translated to many areas of scholarly
capabilities as well. A wealth of data exist to support no gender differences in capacity for understanding
and applying math concepts in K-12 students. Self-confidence is an important variable and predictor for
continuity in advanced-level high school courses, college majors with math as a core requisite, and math-
centered career choices. Differential achievements in mathematics by boys and girls are likely to begin
forming early, and are also more likely to be successfully modified early in life. This session addresses some
approaches to best prepare female middle school students to “fight like a girl” with confidence.
