Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre was looking to become a leading
attraction in Ontario, leveraging off of the reputation of the RMS Segwun that has • already achieved that status.
In order to help develop the Master Plan, Reich&Petch gathered information
during a visioning workshop with select MDC staff and select MS&DC Board
of Directors, a number of conference meetings, and from surveys across three months. During this information gathering process, Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre’s vision, mission, mandates, themes, stories and assets were • examined and assessed.
Feedback, opinions, and suggestions were gleaned from MDC’s Advisory Council
and Board members, staff, volunteers, MDC members and general public visitors, • educators, community partners, and day camp kids. Insightful and valuable
responses were gathered regarding existing and future exhibits, existing and
future programs, and space needs for the Centre. R&P used this feedback as well
as our own assessment of MDC’s exhibits, programs, and facility to inform R&P’s recommendations.

The Master Plan included the following:
a “Macro Interpretive Plan” for the MDC, to improve overall visitor experience
• the Steam Era Exhibit (SEE) Interpretive Plan, complementary Programming Plan, and Exhibits Plan Layout (which supported MS&DC with its Cultural Spaces grant review)
recommendations for building reorganization to address challenges and two options with 3,730sf or 4,450sf of additional space, for a potential addition to the front of the Centre building
preliminary phasing recommendations and costing information that will facilitate MDC’s decision-making process for practical and effective implementation over as many months or years as is suitable for MDC’s resources and priorities
• This Master Plan Report provided many options and a potential “road map” and action plan for the future.
