Latinas Powering Forward

        THE FUTURE IS LATINA

                     Executive Summary

Latinas are raising their standing in American society, and are poised to have an outsized
influence on the future of gender and ethnic equality in the U.S. The nation’s 29 million
Latinas have made significant strides over the past two decades, and like women
across America, Latinas are driven to do more, speak louder and take on positions of
influence that were less attainable in the past. The self-imagery of Latinas has shifted
from careful and reserved to assertive and tenacious. They have aimed to improve their
social standing and assert their civic, social and economic importance in the context of
                     demographic growth and cultural uplifting.

While the glass of U.S. Latina progress can be perceived as three-quarters full, Latinas
are making big and fast strides in education, earnings, and social advancement to even
the playing field. Today, Americans of all backgrounds are listening to Latina music,
watching Latina content and rooting for Latina icons who stand up for inclusion, working-
class communities, family values and a deep respect for where they came from. This
population has a growing fearlessness, often equipped with little to lose and something
to prove. The purpose of this paper is to chronicle Latina progress and to identify the
opportunities and challenges to get the last quarter of the glass filled.
