Each year Talisker Whisky organises an extremely challenging
3000-mile rowing race from La Gomera, Canary Islands to Antigua: the
Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Participants generally can row as
fours, threesomes, pairs or solo, each rowing for a noble cause: their own chosen charities. An Antiguan team has taken
part three times, the last crew being all female, and already featured. But other rowers have also had amazing tales to tell
– some transformational.
Talented Antiguan photographer Ted Martin has been following these races for some time, in- cluding  ying to La Gomera for the starts and welcoming each arrival in Antigua, as witnessed in his excellent images and video interviews. During a volunteering beautiful welcome evening for the crews of the 2018 RORC regatta, he shared many of these stories with me, some that in particular struck a chord with him (and me!)

In fact, that very evening, Brit Kelda Wood was ex- pected to arrive - an ama- zing woman who suffered
a severe leg injury in 2002 and was the  rst adaptive person to take part in such a challenge. Her love of physical activity prompted Brit to row solo in her spe- cially adapted boat Storm Petrel in aid of her own charity Climbing Out, to help and encourage young
