Optimal air quality in the laboratory is not an option, but a legal obligation
based on several regulations.

DIN EN 14175 The European standard for fume hoods. It regulates the requirements for the safety and

CEN/TS 17441 European technical specification, focusing on safe, efficient, and risk-based air
exchange rates.
DIN EN 16000 Regulates the measurement and assessment of indoor air pollutants (e. g. VOCs –
volatile organic compounds).
Occupational The EU sets legally binding occupational exposure limits (e.g., in Directive 2004/37/EC
Exposure Limits for carcinogens and mutagens). These were supplemented in 2024/2025 by new limits
(OEL) for substances such as benzene and cobalt.
REACH (Regulation Regulates the registration and evaluation of chemicals. New additions for 2026
EC 1907/2006) include stricter limits for formaldehyde and PFAS (“perpetual chemicals”).
