The indigenous perspective adopted in this book does not contradict the
important role of external factors in the shaping of historical events. Rather,
it aims to illuminate the largely overlooked role that the local population
played in intercultural discourses, and the significant influence that these
contacts had on the (re)shaping of social identities.
