A Comparative Discussion of
Prophetic Visions in Jeremiah
and Amos
Meirav Nadler
Department of Arabic, Bar-Ilan University
The article deals with the prophetic visions of Jeremiah and Amos
according to Yefet ben cEli’s (10-11th century) commentary. The analyses
focus on two types of prophetic visions – warnings and prophecies: Yefet
classifies these visions into categories according to rhetorical criteria, based
on the manner in which God turns to the prophets Jeremiah and Amos.
According to Yefet ben cEli’s commentary (to the Book of Amos 7-9 and
to the Book of Jeremiah 1), when God asks: “What do you see?” he
actually uses a code when addressing the prophets. The prophets should
figure out God’s intention according to the code. In the case of “What do
you see?”, the prophets were supposed to understand that God would not
be forgiving and that they should not ask for forgiveness.
