Cedars of Lebanon, hyssop, and the
kermes insect for cleansing lepers
and dead bodies
The evergreen symbolizes pride, the
hyssop stands for debasement, and the
kermes insect for transgression. These
contrasting characteristics were meant
to teach a person to behave in a balanced
and straightforward manner. "The priest
shall command them to take for him who
is to be cleansed two living clean birds
and cedar wood and scarlet stuff and
hyssop" (Leviticus 14:4)

Papaver (Poppy), for medical and ritual use, poisoned water
Poisoned water is mentioned twelve times in the Bible, often
next to ‘absinthe’ (wormwood) a name for a bitter medical
potion. The plant could be identified as the cultured poppy,
considering the similarity of the produce of the poppy to
“poisoned water” and the toxic narcotic extracted from it“
and given us poisoned water to drink” (Jeremiah, 8:14)
