A Muslim Court of Law document tells of a Muslim from Silwan who filed a malpractice suit against a Jewish
doctor. The man claimed that the doctor ordered his sick, pregnant wife to drink a potion of senna and was
responsible for the aborted fetus and for her death. The court ruled that the doctor had ordered her to take a
different medicinal infusion and not senna leaves; the doctor was acquitted.

was derived from the Greek tradition, but new therapeutic cures that had arrived in
Jerusalem following the Islamic conquests were also used. Jerusalem was also famous for
the manufacture and export of a famous remedy – Theriac, an antidote to poisons whose
ingredients included the venom of poisonous snakes and scorpions.

With the Crusader conquest of the Holy Land and the establishment of the Kingdom of
Jerusalem (1099), the Frankish rulers discovered the advanced Arab medicine. They preferred
the services of Eastern doctors and adopted the local medical system and its remedies.
At the same time, the hospital of the Order of the Knights Hospitallers was established,
housing about two thousand patients at the height of its activity. It mainly provided services
for pilgrims, the poor, and war casualties. In addition, the Order of St Lazarus operated a
hospital outside the city walls that specialized in caring for lepers.
