Zionism was, first and foremost, a channel for political and social expression
in Jewish society. It introduced a model of Jewish modernity that maintained
a connection to, and affinity for, the Jewish heritage while also offering a
new conceptual platform to constitute an identity base for unifying Jewish
society not only on the level of the individual community, but even between
Jewish communities around the world. Zionism was an ideological and
organizational framework in which Jews could find a place. The historical
importance of Zionism was in creating an alternative, concrete Jewish
national identity, and uniform patterns of action.
