VEGAN JACKFRUIT MEALS
US-based Upton’s Naturals is launching a range of pre-seasoned heat-and-serve vegan jackfruit meals in Australia. The company that calls itself “an independently- owned, ethical vegan company” cooks young but not ripe jackfruit for the prepared meals. Marketed as a nutrient-dense, plant-based meat substitute, Upton’s says the cooked jackfruit tastes like pulled pork or shredded chicken and can be used to stir fry or as an ingredient to make tacos and sandwiches.
The spikey jackfruit, a native to southeast Asia, is reportedly the world’s largest fruit and it is used as a mild-flavoured, nutrient-dense, plant-based substance to make this vegan meat substitute. The company says the ready-to-eat vegan meals are made using natural ingredients, offering a good source of fibre, free of cholesterol, gluten, soy, oil, GMOs, and artificial flavours.
The Jackfruit heat-and-serve meals includes Bar-B-Que, Thai Curry, Chili Lime, Sweet & Smoky, Sriracha as well as an unseasoned original variety. Upton’s Naturals Jackfruit meals are available from health food shops and independent grocery stores with an RRP of $8.95.
