The day wrapped up with a look into the future of packaging print. Brian Lowe, group general manager of Orora Fibre, led the charge with a talk on how Orora is ‘thinking out- side the brown box’, including the purchase of two EFI Nozomi C18000 digital inkjet corrugated packaging presses. Lowe said the Nozomi has "the most sophisticated digital printing capability available in the world today for corrugated boxes" and that it would form a central pil- lar of Orora's customer-led innova- tion going forward.
Lowe then joined Geoff Selig, ex- ecutive chairman of IVE Group; An- drew Macaulay, CEO of Printing In- dustries; and Kellie Northwood, CEO of Real Media Collective for a panel moderated by Print21 publish- ing editor Patrick Howard on future directions for packaging print, and the strategic influences impacting

on the packaging market, looking at the ways that packaging print busi- nesses can meet the challenges and give the market what it wants.
GUESTS GIVE THE THUMBS-UP
Attendees found the event a valuable experience, with many giving the de- but conference their seal of approval. Among these guests was Pierre Pien- aar, president of the World Packaging Organisation, who told Print21 and PKN he found LIVE rewarding and stimulating. “There was a great line- up of speakers who delivered their content well,” he said. “As with PKN’s previous LIVE events, the network- ing was fantastic.”
Among the guests was Wellman Packaging CEO Craig Wellman, this year’s winner of the Australian Packaging Professional of the Year award (see page 20), who sees great value in the industry come together in the one place to learn.
“Print21+ PKN LIVE brings togeth- er smart people with good knowl- edge and great ideas to foster collabo- ration and advancement of our craft,” he said. “It makes an excellent con- tribution to the industry.”
Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) executive director Nerida Kel- ton said the LIVE forum reinforced the importance and value of the packaging and printing industries working together for a common goal of designing innovative solutions.
“A key takeaway from the event is that collaboration is key to success- ful designs, and this was evident when we heard about the amazing Rhinos Down Under project – a world-class printing solution that was developed in Australia.”
Long-time PKN LIVE sponsor Cur- rie Group was the headline sponsor, along with HP, for the event. Mark Daws of Currie Group said he was delighted to have the opportunity be part of this first-off event for the packaging print community. “The positive vibe was palpable, the speakers delivered engaging, inter- esting content that was well received by all those I have spoken to. I look forward to the next LIVE event,” he said.
Lindy Hughson, publisher of Print21 and PKN, said she was de- lighted with the success of this first- ever co-branded LIVE event.
“The speaker content was of a high standard, relevant and engaging, and the positive feedback we have received has been encouraging, and will guide us in developing future events,” she said.
“It is pleasing to be in a position to take the lead on creating an informa- tion-sharing and networking forum of this calibre. This is the first of its kind for our packaging printing community, which is undergoing a transformation brought about in large part by digital printing.” ■
