NEVER BE OFF AIR
Be an airhead – make sure you know what your business needs to choose the right compressor.
YOUR COMPRESSOR ACTS as the lungs of your business – you simply can’t operate without one. There’s a lot to consider when buying a new one and it’s vital that you make a good choice. Don’t be tempted to scrimp on this piece of equipment by buying an inferior model. An unreliable compressor will cost your business dearly in downtime. Some rapid shops have two compressors to avoid this ever happening and alternate to
slow wear and tear.
The latest air compressors on the market are vastly more efficient that their predecessors, and can offer significant energy savings. The purchase price itself is only 10 percent of the lifetime cost of the machine – energy accounting for around 70 percent. A compressor supplier will audit your business to see what size unit you need to run you workshop tools, but you also need to consider how much noise the unit makes. There’s a wealth of information at the Compressed Air Association of Australia website:compressedair.net.au. The three main features to look out for are:
• CFM: Cubic feet per minute which is the basic measuring tool that tells you how fast a compressor can supply air. Downtime will occur if your technicians have to wait for the compressor to supply enough air to it.
• PSI: A higher max PSI also allows for a smaller tank to hold more air and perform with the effectiveness of a larger tank. • dB: The decibel level really matters an 80-dB machine is four
times as loud as a 60-dB machine.
