TRAINDREAM
Mark Davidson is a photographer and radio producer based in Melbourne. His passion for photography was born out of a love of travel, and his work focuses predominantly on captur- ing the shapes and shadows of Melbourne’s streets.
His image, Traindream, was captured on his commute.
“I noticed how the light was hitting the concourse as we pulled into North Melbourne Station,” he says. “I got off the train and took this candid shot as more peak-hour trains arrived from the opposite direction and commuters came down the escalators and onto the platform.”

ANTHONY MCKEE
The best photographs often have a good mix of complex
visual ideas and a strong sense of moment. This image from North Melbourne Station is a great example; it has interesting light, strong tonal contrasts, dynamic shapes, and a gorgeous juxtaposition between the soft human shadow and the individual in the carriage. And in the bottom right of the picture, the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, as if to remind commuters of the large metaphorical wheel that many feel like they are treading every day. This photo is as much
a story about life as it is about place, which is why I love it.
JACKIE RANKEN
This image explores the idea of a place on multiple levels.
A sophisticated composition that captures a moment in time in a unique and exciting way.
My eye moves around the frame from the descending silhouetted shadow on the stairway to the scene reflected in the train window, then jarringly is brought to the profile view of a man’s head suspended in dark space.
There are no answers here, just questions and that’s what captivates me.
