  JUDGES’ COMMENTS
JOHN CRAWFORD
This image is outstanding for
a number of reasons. At a quick glance, my first impression was “another composite with some degree of trickery”. However,
I was wrong.
It’s a beautifully seen, beautifully crafted, precise piece of imagery. I’m a sucker for abstract and simple form, and this image is all about that, and provides many differing paths for the eye to journey around and explore. It has a wonderful lasting quality that will not date. A classic work.
LESLEY DOWNIE
At first, the viewer feels a sense of mirroring in the subject, but on closer inspection, one sees every part of this capture is unique
with such a complexity of detail it takes quite some time to read all the detail. It has been presented beautifully in a delicate range of grey tones, pin sharp and squared off for a harmonious balance. The image suggests a very strong sense of place, awe inspiring
with wonder, and extremely well handled by the photographer.
LIZ BARKER
LA TOUR EIFFEL
Born in New Zealand, Liz Barker moved to Perth, Western Australia, in her late teens and has lived there ever since. Having first picked up a DLSR about six years ago, she says she tries to look for a new and different way to photograph her subject “whatever it might be”.
“I have a particular interest in urban landscape, architecture and black and white landscape photography, and some- times it ends up being a combination of all three,” she says.
Her Places category winning image does the seemingly impossible – show- ing one of the world’s most photographed buildings in a unique and interesting way.
“Looking directly up under the tower, I was amazed at the intricate detail of the steel work,” she says. “It looks like deli- cate lace, yet is it solid iron. The black and white conversion enhances the look of lace that captured my imagination.”
