Without colour to assist in separating elements within a scene, lighting becomes even more important. The right light can create the contrast
and separation we desire in a strong monochromatic image, as well as establishing mood and highlighting shape and form. Look for strong forms and shapes that are capturing light that suits the subject. A delicate subject needs gentle light; a geometric or strong one may benefit from more directional or harsher light to bring out its qualities.

If you can learn to master black and white image making, everything
else becomes rather easy, but monochromatic images don’t have to be black, white and grey – in fact, the word monochromatic simply means an image made up using various shades of the one colour. So don’t
be scared to totally desaturate your photographs in Lightroom or ACR, and then add a hint of colour back into the image using the Split Toning controls. The secret to adding colour back into the photograph is to keep it subtle. Less is more.
