B&W TIPS FROM THE JUDGES
Jackie Ranken
Look for the action and capture the story within your viewfinder. Be patient and put the time and effort into practicing the camera techniques that excite you. Once you begin to understand these techniques – and have made a lot of mistakes along the way – it will become easier to
see the photos that are “that little bit more special”, then you will be able to push your boundaries further and chase that next best shot.
Natalie Grono
Firstly, visualise your scene in black and white, as not all situations will make amazing black and white images. You should get in the habit of visualising
in monochrome, not just converting
the images later as an afterthought. Consider why and what you are trying to communicate through black and white.
Douwe Djikstra
Don’t be afraid to show areas of dark blacks and/or bright whites, even
if it’s two-thirds or more of your composition. It creates great contrast and your highlighted subject will pop.
