B&W TIPS FROM THE JUDGES
Lesley Downie
Composition is very critical, especially when presenting an image in monotone. Cropping successfully to isolate the main elements
of the image without including superfluous aspects, which can detract from the strength of the image, is important. Too many
times images contain too much competing information which weaken the image.
Alex Cearns
When capturing black and white images, you can’t lead with strong colours, but you can still create
an image which has impact. Train your eye to notice different patterns, shapes and textures, then construct your composition around these elements. Thinking about your shot before you take it and aiming to capture what you see in your mind’s eye will mean less editing time later.
