Contract manufacturing and packing specialist Multipack is seeing growth in demand for food packaging solutions that cater to the on-the-go market. PKN spoke to sales director Brad Devine about how the company is helping brands big and small get their products on shelf.
HE functional food and beverage sector is taking off, according to Multipack sales and marketing director Brad Devine, and his business is seeing an attendant growth in the demand for convenient,
single-portion packaging.
“This is not a new area for
Multipack, but we’re definitely seeing a spike in demand as the health and wellness trend leans towards products that offer func- tional, value-add benefits,” he says.
Single shot beverages are a case in point. Shine, a start-up product which Multipack was instrumental in getting off the ground, is a 100ml shot ‘tonic’ for mental acuity. As cov- ered previously by PKN, the product has been extremely successful since its launch by entrepreneur Steve Chapman three years ago. Shine has recently decided to upgrade the lidding on its shot bottle from a plastic closure to an aluminium cap, and to this end Multipack has invested in a purpose-built ROPP bottling and capping line.
“The alu cap provides a tamper evident seal and extended shelf life for the drink,” Devine explains. “Our

investment was justified because we have taken on a new client in the functional beverage sector, called Rogue Beverages, with its Shojo range of ‘hangover cures’ that are also bottled and capped on this line.”
Another interesting functional beverage, this time a dry product packed in sachets, comes from Multipack’s client BeforeYouSpeak, founded by two young entrepre- neurs Ash Bissett and Jaryd Terkel- son, who decided to decided to turn their habit of putting additives into their coffee “to get more out of it” into an actual product. The result is a premium instant coffee product, with additives that improve health, wellbeing and performance. Nine months into its set-up, the company already offers nine SKUs, six of which are packed by Multipack.
Multipack packs the single-serve sachets into cartons of 30, and for this contract, has invested in a purpose-built form-fill-seal sachet line with an integrated counting conveyor. Its smart features allow it to drop 10 sachets at a time into the secondary carton.
In the snack space, Multipack is working with a brand owner to

deliver a popcorn-in-a-cup solution to convenience stores. Once again, the company has invested in purpose-built equipment, this time a twin-head filler that doses volumet- rically into the in-mould labelled polypropylene cups which are then sealed with a multi-laminate lid.
“This packaging is designed to fit into a car’s cup holder, a snacking option that really taps into the on-the-go trend,” says Devine, noting that other projects in the Multipack pipeline indicate that functional convenience food is a segment set to boom. ■
