Pact Group launched its End of Waste white paper in Melbourne, with the goal of meeting tough sustainability targets – such as reusing all single-use secondary super- market packaging, and reaching 30 per cent recycled material across its portfolio – by 2025. The white paper examined the eco- nomic costs of
both change and inertia; opportu- nities available to the industry; and solutions to the problem of house- hold waste.
PKN travelled to Belgium to speak to packaging solutions developer Esko about its Packaging Connected philoso- phy. According to Esko executives, the company is automating every step in the packaging production process, and inte- grating MIS and ERP as well; Esko is also connecting the physical package to the online world. Around 300 million packaging jobs were processed through Esko workflows in the year to September 2018, its highest ever figure for a 12-month period.
Recycling of eligible drink containers soared by 69 per cent in NSW after the Return and Earn container deposit scheme was implemented in November 2017, and Coca-Cola Australia part- nered with environmental collective CitizenBlue to take advantage of the program as part of its
recycling goals. The campaign saw Co- ca-Cola and Citi- zenBlue place drink container bins in venues and events throughout NSW, with the 10- cent refund from each container go- ing to charity.
To help make Industry 4.0 and IIoT tech- nology more accessible, Nord, SMC Pneu- matics, Beckhoff Automation, Balluff and ZI-Argus joined forces to form a new open- source knowledge group dubbed Open IIoT, which aimed to simplify the complex top- ics for customers. The group planned to work with the government and industry, including relevant associations like APPMA, to help Australian manufacturers catch up to their counterparts from around the world.

The white ink allows photographic images and vivid colours to be printed directly to brown kraft liner.

Oji Fibre Solutions (OjiFS) launched a breakthrough box design out of its new plant in Yatala, Queensland. The three- piece box minimises movement of produce in transit and resists crushing, meaning vegetables arrive at markets as far away as Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne looking as if they were just picked. The box stacks square with no leaning or tilting, and its lo- cating lugs slot into the box above it to pre- vent twisting.
