are that are working for them, are you going to be getting people who are self-performing, are you going to be get- ting an actual Aboriginal workforce who are going to be ongoing employed.
I understand that labour hire is a necessity, I understand that short term project employment opportunities are a necessity; we all engage in those models but as a nation building foundation, I challenge Defence in engaging with Aboriginal business to think about what is the ongoing em- ployment model attached to the Aboriginal business they’re engaged with. Because that’s how Aboriginal people break the cycle of welfare dependence.
Ongoing employment helps us to get out of public hous- ing into private housing, helps us to engage in the econo- my, helps us to engage in personal loans, home ownership, car buying, more purchasing, more economic engagement which is better for the nation. It saves the taxpayer, it re- duces recidivism. Short term, short fix solutions aren’t nec- essarily the game-changer for Aboriginal people.
In working with Aboriginal business, I challenge Defence contractors and Defence themselves to think bigger, not just Aboriginal business ownership but real Aboriginal en- gagement, real Aboriginal employment opportunities and what does it look like to create packages of work that allow for sustained employment.
