DARRELL LEA
LOOKS TO NEW
HORIZONS
Confectionery icon Darrell Lea has shared plans to expand into ice cream and muffins through new food industry collaborations.
Darrell Lea flavours such as Rocklea Road, peppermint nougat and peanut brittle will be sold in
the summer in collaboration with Everest Ice Cream Australia.
These flavours are all aimed at the “scoop & cone” retail market.
Everest Ice Cream manufactures three brands of ice cream including the premium NorgenVaaz brand, its
traditional gelato brand Everest, and a
new gourmet, batch-made gelato
brand Gelateria which is made using imported Italian
ingredients.
In addition Everest Ice Cream
Australia also makes ice cream in Australia under contract for many big names in ice cream.
It’s not Darrell Lea’s first ice cream-confectionery dalliance. Last year Darrell Lea partnered with Unilever to create a new Blue Ribbon Darrell Lea Rocklea Road and other confectionery flavours.
Darrell Lea says plans are also afoot to partner with Muffin Break on new products.
The confectionery company has staged a strong comeback six years after being bought out of voluntary administration by Queensland entrepreneurs, Tony and Christina Quinn, who in January sold the majority of the business to Quadrant Private Equity for $200 million.
Darrell Lea recently bought the Lifesavers brand from Nestlé, with the manufacturing of the iconic brand to move from Nestle in New Zealand back to Australia. Darrell Lea will be manufacturing Life Savers at its production plant in south- western Sydney.
ERIEZ has enhanced its Rare Earth permanent magnet technology with the a new and improved Xtreme RE7 Tube Circuit which has been shown to be 13 to 40 percent stronger than other magnets in head-to-head pull tests.
Eriez commissioned Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to determine which commercial tube magnet most effectively removes and holds dangerous ferrous metal and weakly magnetic contaminants from process flows. Thirteen tube magnets from various suppliers were stripped of brand identity and then provided to the Behrend College at Penn State for testing.
According to conclusions noted by Penn State, the pull force of the Xtreme RE7 Tube Circuit was substantially stronger than any of the other samples. The pull force is the single most critical measurement because it clearly demonstrates how effective the magnet is in hanging on to the contaminant metal and not releasing it back into the flow.
The Eriez Xtreme RE7 magnet circuit is available in all Eriez Tubes, Grates and Liquid Line Traps used in food, plastics and other applications.
“The increased power of the Xtreme RE7 has a direct and positive impact on product purity and plant productivity,” Eriez Magnetic Separation product manager Eric Confer says.
“Customers benefit from the increased strength of the new Xtreme RE7 products without any additional cost over our previous Rare Earth products.”
stainless, and bolts, before the end product reaches customers.
The use of the Xtreme RE7 tube circuit also helps draw out fine tramp metal along critical points of the production line.
Eliminating metal contamination also prevents damage to expensive processing machinery,
“ The increased power of the Xtreme RE7 has a direct and positive impact on product purity and plant productivity.”
Xtreme RE7 Tube Circuit surpasses previous models and competitive units not only with greater holding force but also improved separation efficiency, its maker says. For customers in the process industries, this has a direct and positive impact on plant productivity.
Attention to product purity on the production line has never been greater, Eriez says, creating the need for manufacturers to detect and eliminate foreign objects and ferrous metals such as rust, nails, scale, work-hardened
reducing downtime and repair costs.
Periodically, magnets should be tested to confirm their strength and to ensure compliance with current international food safety standards, according to Eriez. To check magnet strength, Eriez offers Pull Test Kits which, when used properly, help users monitor the consistency of their magnetic separator by measuring the holding force of a magnet.
“There are some pull test kits out there that include a test piece ring that is actually magnetic. This can skew the results and show a magnet to be stronger than it truly is,” Confer says.
In contrast, Eriez’ Pull Test Kit uses a standard non- magnetic test piece to ensure the most accurate results.
Eriez says its technology solutions have all been designed to protect downstream equipment from damage and ensure consumer products are freeofmetalcontaminants. ✷
