Badge of approval
A program aimed at certifying and promoting products which are free of palm oil has been launched.
THE world’s first Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark and Certification Program (POFCAP) has assessed the first vegetable oils applying to use the trademark, and these are from Australian company, MSM Milling.
There are currently a high number of food products containing vegetable oil, and
most products which include vegetable oil in their ingredients include a blend which contains palm oil, according to POFCAP.
MSM Milling has had eight of its edible oils, and an expeller- pressed canola meal product, successfully assessed by POFCAP’s certification process.
The oilseed processing operation turns canola seed, bought direct from Australian farmers, into value-added oil and meal products.
POFCAP co-founder Debra Mineely said the assessment was a significant step given the prolific use of vegetable oil in so many products.
The Australian founded certification trademark has, since launch, been granted approval by the relevant government authorities of nine countries to certify products in those regions, with a further nine applications currently pending.
Since its inception in late 2017, it has assessed 616 products and certified them palm-oil free, including soaps made in Ireland and Australia, skincare from Scotland, American snacks, spices
and nut butters, Isle of Man Christmas puddings,
and pet food. ✷

Science and nutrition company Royal DSM has been celebrated for its omega-3 fatty acids made from natural marine algae rather than fish oil from wild-caught fish. Fortune Magazine’s 2018 Change the World list mentioned DSM’s positive social impact for the third consecutive year.
Veramaris, DSM’s joint venture with Evonik, was developed for animal nutrition applications, helping support life below water by reducing impact on ocean resources.
Fortune also praised DSM’s contributions to The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit aiming to rid the world’s oceans of plastic through advanced technology. DSM supports their mission by sharing facilities, materials knowledge and networks.
