bond to properly prepared steel, aluminium, magne- sium, and composites in all combinations with the added benefit of preventing galvanic corrosion in multi-material joints. The inclusion of glass spacer beads pre-mixed with the adhesive maintains the op- timum minimum bondline thickness which allows parts to more easily slide across each other during positioning and repairers to securely clamp or fasten parts together without the concern of ‘starving’ the bondline and reducing bond performance.
As vehicle technology progresses to demand lighter and stronger components, the joints that hold it all together must also evolve.
Combining welds or rivets with adhesives like 3M IRSA allows repairers to restore complex connections between mixed or sensitive materials in a manner that preserves strength and durability.
While the terms hybrid joining, rivet bonding and weld sealing sound complicated, the process is straight- forward and approachable.
Most Automotive OEM’s are using body structure adhesives in manufacturing and some OEM’s are writing repair procedures that call for 3M IRSA in- cluding General Motors, Tesla, Jaguar Land Rover, Honda and Hyundai.

PANEL BONDING USING THE COMBINATION
of adhesive and spot welding has be- come the norm in vehicle manufactur- ing globally. Insistence by insurance companies to guarantee accident repairs to OEM condition means the appropriate adhesive with the vehicle manufactur- ers’ approval must be used to ensure the structural integrity of the vehicle is maintained. The advantages of adhesive bonding over welding are corrosion pro- tection, fast cycle time and less exposure to welding heat and UV.
The proliferation of adhesives without proper chemistry is the biggest threat to safety of post-accident repair vehicles. It may be poor education or cost saving that causes inappropriate or unapproved adhe- sive to be used for the repair job.
It is imperative when selecting after- market adhesive that the product is ap- proved by the manufacturer, as it will be the same original adhesive used in vehi- cle manufacturing.
Lord Corporation has a strong OEM supply connection globally. Its metal bonding adhesive LORD Fusor 108B metal bonding adhesive was introduced in 1997. It is specified for use by Gen- eral Motors, Ford, Daimler-Chrysler, Mazda and Nissan. It can be used for panel bonding, weld bonding and rivet bonding of steel, aluminium and al- most all metals.
The Fusor 108B is a two-component acrylic adhesive. It is up to eight times faster than the typical panel bonders, with guaranteed corrosion protection and ex- cellent for rivet bonding and weld bonding applications. This allows for the panel to be bonded using adhesives, then spot- welded through the adhesive bond line.
Suitable applications include panel bond- ing and weld bonding of quarter panels, rear body panels, roof panels, door skins, van side panels and outer truck bed panels.
The formulation has 30 per cent more lap shear strength and it is crash-proven to ex- ceed US Federal safety standard.

DEVELOPED FOR BODY REPAIR, THE TWO-
component epoxy TEROSON EP 5065 com- bines strong adhesion with excellent corrosion protection. It can be used on steel and alumin- ium without primer. The solvent- free adhesive is recommended especially to bond roofs, rocker panels and side walls. It has high initial strength both at high and low temperatures (-40oC-80oC). You can cure at room tempera- ture or speed up the process with heat.
