Coming together
Serving both the web and sheetfed markets, manroland has strengthened its hand in the web sector following last year’s merger with Goss. Dennis Wickham, managing director
of manroland Goss Australasia, tells Print21 that the deal has been a positive for the industry.
“The resources we have between the two companies have allowed us to better support both Goss and manroland customers through increased staff, and knowledge being able to be shared across both platforms,” he says.
This support doesn’t just extend to the presses it sells, which now include the Goss M600 and Sunday presses as well as manroland’s Lithoman and Rotoman platforms; it also encompasses after-sales service.
“With the two companies coming together, we’ve been able to increase our service offering to the customer and grow a support base for the industry.
“We are assisting customers
to get the most out of their equipment through optimising machinery to its fullest potential. This involves taking older technology and bringing it up to date with servicing, upgrades and retrofits, rather than replacing equipment,” says Wickham.
One important factor in the web market is speed,
says Wickham, with many manroland presses now including in-line features designed to boost efficiency.
“We’ve managed to reach speeds of forty-five to fifty thousand revolutions per
hour for some time now, but customers are now requesting more in-line functionality like colour control, register control, cut-off control, and fan-out control. These functions are necessary to keep pace with technology, reduce waste and assist in improving machine effectiveness,” he says.
According to Wickham, with production runs shortening, sheetfed customers with presses such as the Roland 700 Evolution, the Roland 900, and the smaller format Roland 200 and 500, have also been looking for their technology to keep pace with demand.
“A lot of sheetfed customers are pushing down the road of faster makeready functions, including simultaneous plate loading, inline colour control, and inline register control, which assist in speeding up makeready times.
“We also have a lot of software improvements in regards to the network flow of information from planning to press operation and reporting, which assist in the overall improvement of the equipment effectiveness,” he says.

Komori adds perfectors
Komori has added perfectors to its Lithrone G37 and Lithrone GX40 press lineups. The G37P is capable of single-pass double-sided printing, while the GX40P offers high-speed, stable two-sided printing at speeds of around 18,000 sheets per hour, according to Komori.
“The new Lithrone G37P perfecting mechanism has a rotating structure at the gripper that is gripping the tail edge of the sheet, and there are no gripper changes while perfecting, enabling stable front/ back register.
“The Lithrone GX40P’s perfecting mechanism uses Komori’s unique three double-size cylinder arrangement. The impression cylinder, transfer cylinder and perfecting cylinder are each double-size to avoid stress on the paper,” the company says.
