Offset
From digital
to offset
The printing world is much abuzz with stories of offset printers going digital – but the conversion is going both ways, according to Bernard Cheong of Cyber, which distributes Ryobi MHI Graphic Technology (RMGT) presses in Australia.
“With advanced automation and LED-UV dry to dry printing system, users are bringing digital back to offset,” says Cheong. “Improved job turnaround time and low waste have allowed ultra- short runs, typically digitally printed, to be printed on a modern offset press profitably.”
One such user is Pacific Print of San Diego, which installed the RMGT 9 Series offset press. According to Andrew Goett, president of Pacific Print, the idea of going from digital back to offset even a year before had been unthinkable.
“With the cost of plates, chemistry, ink, setup, and so on, we wouldn’t have thought the break-even would be that low. But
we went out to Japaan, saw the factory and visited RMGT users in Japan. We saw people setting up the press in five to seven minutes, and literally running seventy to
a hundred sheets, then doing a new setup. That was pretty eye- opening,” he says.
Since installing the 9 Series, Pacific Print has begun to move digital work of around 250 to 300 sheets onto the offset press, and Goett expects the line to dip even lower.
Cyber sells RMGT’s 920PF-10 LED 5-over-5 convertible perfecting A1-size press; the 920PF-8 LED 4-over-4 convertible perfecting A1-size press; the 920ST-4 LED
4 colour A1-size press; and the 790ST-5 LED 5 colour B2-size press into Australia. According to Cheong, approximately 85 per cent of its new machine sales are fitted with LED- UV technology.
“RMGT is the pioneer in the use of LED-UV technology. We are the LED pioneers”, he says.
Digital may be all the rage – but evolving offset isn’t going anywhere. 21

manroland’s most advanced
sheetfed yet
Superseding the Roland 700 HS and Roland 700 Direct Drive,
the Roland 700 Evolution is manroland’s most advanced sheetfed platform, according to Dennis Wickham.
“When you look at the level of automation and technology available on the Evolution platform from manroland sheetfed,
it has improved reliability, speed, quality, and efficiency of those presses to a new level,” he says.
Printing at 18,000 sheets per hour, the
700 Evolution includes direct drive technology; feeder, delivery and dampening units built for high-speed printing;
suction belt
sheet handling technology; vibration-reducing bearings; and a new touchscreen- operated central control console.
