Action stations
I am truly excited to bring you this issue. I used to report on the carbon economy and environmental management so this issue’s Environmental Matters feature (from page 16) is close to my heart.
The depth and scale of action being taken in our sector is encouraging. Mars Food Australia is focused on moving to a circular economy with all its packaging under review. Lion is stamping out its carbon footprint while investing in community programs, and
then there is brewery Young Henrys trialing research using algae to reduceitsCO2output. Leadershipinmanyforms, withno greenwashing but a lot of actual doing. These companies, along with the likes of Coca-Cola Amatil have put sustainability,
waste management, packaging and recyclability at the centre of their business.
Our Rising Star profile this month is on dairy farmers Sallie Jones and Steve Ronalds both experienced significant personal hardship as well as weathering major changes and crises in their industry. But they got back up, created Gippsland Jersey and are running their business based on kindness and community (page 10).
In Meat, Fish & Poultry (page 26), we profile Petar Pirovic from Pirovic Family Farms. He has spent ten years building an organic free-range chicken farm, which is testament to his determination and love of chooks.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is probably the most hyped advancement in the business world since the telephone. Our interview with the CEO of AI company Complexica
Matt Michalewicz (page 32) talks about its best application. It has so much scope for F&B manufacturing.
Finally, I hope you have seen our new project – a weekly video news round-up called PLAY Food & Drink Business. It is out every Thursday, so sign up to our eNewsletters on the website so you don’t miss out.
Onward.
