BioPak launches Australia’s first coffee cup composting service in Perth
Sustainable packaging company, BioPak, has teamed up with Perth cafes to launch a comprehensive service for composting disposable coffee cups.
The program allows customers to dispose of used coffee cups and BioPak compostable takeaway food packaging in specially designed collection bins, located in various cafes and workplaces.
BioPak founder Richard Fine says that goal behind the iniative is
to reduce the methane that gets released “when food waste decomposes in landfills ... [it’s] a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.”
Aussie cafe brand secures backing from US company that invests in Momofuku
Founded by Australian Nicholas Stone, American coffee shop chain, Bluestone Lane, has announced that it has secured capital from US group, RSE Ventures, enabling it to double the number of stores and to expand globally.
Stone launched Bluestone Lane in New York in 2013. The RSE Ventures’ investment will take the cafe brand from a 30-store operation in six cities to 60 stores across 10 cities, and allow it to further develop its consumer-packaged goods (CPG) and lifestyle business.
Le Cordon Bleu receives first students at new Brisbane school
International culinary and hospitality school, Le Cordon Bleu, has received its first intake of students following the launch its new Queensland institute at South Bank, Brisbane on Monday July 9.
Le Cordon Bleu Australia’s CEO, Derrick Casey, has been thrilled with the level of interest in practical and theoretical culinary training in Brisbane. “Based on industry demand and the great range of vocational and higher education programmes we offer,” he says,
“we’re looking at an additional 160 students in our first year, increasing potentially to over 400 students by the end of 2021.”
Venue fined for dumping drunk, unconscious women on street
Sydney CBD restaurant, Gangnam Station, has been fined $2,200 for leaving two, drunk and unconscious patrons on Sussex Street after serving them 16 shots within a 40 minute window. The incident took place on November 9, 2017, at about 8pm when three women entered the Korean restaurant and ordered shots of soju.
Gangnam Station’s licensee, Sunhwa Kim, has been issued a ‘first strike’ under the NSW Government’s ‘three strikes’ disciplinary scheme. The Independent Liquor and Gambling Authority is also contemplating bringing forward its closing time from 2 am to midnight.
