Action plan to manage massive demand for cooling
INDIA HAS LAUNCHED an action plan to deal with a massive demand for cooling expect- ed over the next two decades.
The plan includes initiatives to phasedown HFCs, improve energy efficiency and seek out cli- mate friendly technologies.
The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) seeks to
India’s Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr Harsh Vardhan
reduce cooling demand by 25% to 30% by 2037- 38 using 2017-18 as the base year.
This is in addition to reducing cooling de- mand across industry sectors by 20% to 25%, while at the same time reducing cooling energy requirements by 25% to 40% over the same peri- od of time.
While India is yet to officially ratify the Kigali Amendment, India’s Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr Harsh Vardhan, said the aim of the action plan is to look for syn- ergies to achieve both environmental and socio- economic benefits.
“The overarching goal of ICAP is to provide sustainable cooling and thermal comfort for all while securing environmental and socio-eco- nomic benefits for the society. This will also help in reducing both direct and indirect emis- sions,” he said.
“Climate action is not a technical issue, but a moral issue for us. India is the first country in the
world to have a nationwide cooling action plan.” India’s per capita cooling energy consumption is currently only 69kWh per person, against a global average of 272kWh, but India’s aggregated nationwide cooling requirement is projected to
grow eight-fold by 2037-38.
Building sector cooling is set to experience 11-
fold growth from 2017-18 levels.
Even though India has some of the lowest
cooling access in the world, considering that only 8% of households have room air condi- tioners, studies show that this will rise to 40% by 2037-38.
The action plan also recommends use of cli- mate appropriate and energy efficient building design for construction as well as the introduc- tion of building energy codes, thermal comfort standards, eco-labelling of cooling products.
Vardhan also announced a national skills de- velopment program to train 100,000 new RAC technicians by 2022-23.
Panasonic air conditioner president, Toshi- yuki Takagi, said the partnership opens the way to potential synergies in development that meet the tough environmental demands of customers. “We are creating long-term busi- ness opportunities in an expanding European market,” he said. “Systemair's unique product range and long experience in HVAC fit perfect- ly with our undertaking to offer customers ex- ceptional value,” Systemair CEO, Roland Kasper, said the partnership opens the door to new opportunities. “Through collaboration we'll soon be able to offer even better solu- tions, which will come to play an important role in the development of the climate systems of the future for buildings.”
Systemair and Panasonic announce partnership
Systemair CEO, Roland Kasper
SYSTEMAIR AND PANA- SONIC, have announced a strategic partnership aimed at developing joint solutions.
The collaboration be- tween Systemair and Pana- sonic will be based on exist- ing texisting technology and expertise of both partners.
The collaboration will also make use of the companies' smart cloud-based services. The partners will strive for seamless integration be- tween Systemair's ventilation products and Pa- nasonic's high-tech heat pumps for residential and commercial properties, as well as its con- trol technology and connection facilities. Through the collaboration, the two companies will be able to create a new, powerful value offer that meets their customer requirements.
In the first phase, Panasonic will introduce a new series of high-efficiency and eco- friendly heat pump chillers incorporating Systemair's innovative reversible cooling technology. The new integrated products are fully adaptable and suitable for use in creat- ing solutions for specific projects (including in the light commercial sector) to meet all as- pects of customer requirements. Systemair and Panasonic are also engaged in a develop- ment collaboration on technology and func- tions to be incorporated into cooling and heat pump technology products. The objec- tive is to create more eco-friendly and ultra- modern chiller and heat pump products for the European market.
The partnership aims to expand business opportunities in Europe where Panasonic already has a strong presence.
