ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE
History:
Founded in 1920 to set standards for dance teaching, today the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) has a presence in 89 countries, with approximately 13,000 members worldwide. We count more than 1,000 students in our teacher training programmes, and more than a quarter of a million students are being examined on our core syllabus. On 31 December 2020 the RAD celebrates 100 years of teaching the world to dance.
In Australia we examine around 25,000 students annually taught by 1,000 RAD registered teachers and 100 trainee teachers. We are committed to widening access to dance for everybody with our range of exams and broader
initiatives including Project B – our
male dance initiative to encourage
and provide pportunities for male dancers and educators and Silver SwansTM – our over 55’s licenced ballet programme designed to provide a lifelong connection with dance.

MARKING AND ASSESSMENT:
All candidates who successfully pass an examination or award receive a certificate of achievement and a breakdown of their result. Some grades and awards also offer medals.
TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
Our Faculty of Education offers a range of flexible learning programmes of study, including degrees validated by the University of Bath and professional awards of the RAD. Programmes levels are consistent with the UK Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.
We also offer a Continuing Professional Development Scheme ensuring that RAD registered teachers update their knowledge and skills and enhance their career progression.
COMPETITIONS AND AWARDS:
Awards days are offered in every State and also include the Australian Advanced 1 Bursary.
The pinnacle of achievement for an RAD student is the opportunity to enter the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition where they experience five days of coaching with international faculty and choreographers and compete medals and other awards.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
The RAD offers a range of additional study and performance opportunities for students. We also offer a biannual conference for educators, scholars and researchers to come together and share the latest developments and best practice advice on a range of subjects.
PHILOSOPHY:
The RAD’s mission is to develop and promote the knowledge, understanding and practice of dance internationally. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to dance.

STYLES COVERED:
Ballet and Ballet Repertoire are examined but workshops and performance opportunities are also offered in most other dance genres.
GRADING SYSTEM:
Starting with Dance to Your Own Tune at age 2, students move through our Pre-Primary and Primary levels before moving on to Graded and Vocational Graded levels. Grades 1 to 8 incorporate ballet, free movement, and character, and are suitable for candidates from 7 years (Grades 1-5) and 11 years (Grades 6-8). The Vocational Graded Syllabus develops technique, music and performance skills of older students to an advanced level, preparing them for a dance or dance-related career. Both levels lead to recognised achievement at a high level in dance and are also recognised by vocational schools, universities and other HE institutions offering degree courses and performing arts programmes.
