  SHOCK TACTICS
SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH CAN HAPPEN AT ANY AGE. AN ESTIMATED 430,000 AUSTRALIANS HAVE HAD A HEART ATTACK AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES, AND EVERY YEAR 57,000 AUSTRALIANS SUFFER A HEART ATTACK.
ASPAINT&PANELHASAFEA- ture on electric cars this issue, we thought we would look into
defibrillators as there is the pos- sibility of a massive electric shock if you don’t follow the correct proce- dures and train everyone from the cus- tomer service officer to the detailer to eliminate the risk of electrocution.
As it turns out, the chance of some- one having a heart attack without the assistance of an electric shock is far more likely – be it one of your team, one of your customers, a visiting sup- plier or a neighbouring business.
There are approximately 33,000 out of hospital sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) each year in Australia. One in 300 people in our community have an undiagnosed cardiac condition. Ge- netics and cardiovascular disease are the main conditions that cause an SCA.
The key to survival however is being familiar with The Chain of Survival, it's a world recognised system that gives a victim the best chance of survival. The earlier a victim is treated by defibrilla- tion the greater the chance of survival, ideally within 3 minutes, meaning it's up to our colleagues and friends to re- act immediately even before ambulance and paramedics arrive.
Cardiac arrest does not discriminate and can happen at any stage and the risks are increased by stress, physical activity or excitement.
If a victim's heart rhythm is shocked back to normal by use of a defibrillator its highly probable that the underlying cause can be identified and potentially rectified in hospital.
People aged 45 to 55 are at the highest risk of a SCA (that's probably the majority of your tradespeople and many managers).
Defibrillators for businesses cost
around $2000, they can be reused and, with a minimal amount of upkeep, may last 10-20 years. If that sounds expen- sive imagine how much it will cost your business if one of your technicians tragically dies from a SCA not to men- tion the trauma to you, the whole team and their families.
By knowing where the closest defibril- lator is located, you could save a life. Not only does it talk you through with voice prompts, the device makes all the crucial decisions for you. It absolutely can’t shock anyone unless their heart has stopped - you can’t make the victim worse, but you can make them a whole lot more alive.
